Farah personal training client

Farah had a lower quality of life than what she wanted and turned to a knowledgable personal trainer for help.  The strength and flexibility she gained from personal training was a game-changer.

I was officially diagnosed with Scoliosis at age 16. I adjusted to the imbalances of my body and remained physically active. My lifelong back troubles did not end there.  I was diagnosed with Spondylolisthesis at age 25, a condition when one vertebra in your spine slides forward and out of place.  This impacted my daily activities by requiring frequent rest breaks due to pain.

With both my Scoliosis and Spondylolisthesis, the importance of strengthening exercises was never promoted.  However, being stubborn, I did not allow this condition to take away my independence.

In late 2011 another major life event was thrown at me.  I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Stage 3). I completed chemotherapy and radiation therapy over the next seven months.  Cancer, chemotherapy, and radiation seemed to deplete most of my energy.  I remained conscious of my diet during treatment but was not physically active due to the side effects of treatment. Because of the lack of physical activity and high doses of steroids, I gained approximately 30 pounds. The weight gain and my lack of core strength seem to intensify the lower back pain and impacted my posture.

After completing treatment and regaining my strength, I began to reincorporate exercise into my life, primarily using a recumbent bike at the gym, and was able to lose some weight.  I was so afraid to use weight training machines because of my back conditions.

In October 2014, my life was turned upside down again.  I was in a car accident and sustained multiple fractures to my right heel and two fractures to the left radius. Both injuries required surgery and orthopedic casts.  I was non-weight bearing on the right foot for three months, using a transport chair or a platform walker in order to get around my home.  I noticed that my arms and legs began to atrophy at a very fast pace. I began physical therapy in March of 2015 and learned to walk all over again.  I instantly noticed that my balance and posture were impacted greatly.  In fact, I fell several times.

Not long after this, I turned to Sensible Fitness.  For the first time in the past 5 years, I feel like I am able to stand taller and like my body is finally strong enough to accommodate the imbalances that my back conditions have imposed.  My posture has really improved and my back is becoming stronger and rarely aches unless I am on my feet too long.  I feel like a new person.  I actually stepped backwards, down hill, onto the uneven pavement and stumbled while visiting the zoo on Sunday….it is amazing that I was able to regain my balance and prevent myself from falling.  I assure you that I would have landed on the ground if I were not training with Sensible Fitness.

While strength, posture, and balance are all important to me, so is wearing heels.  Wearing shoes with heels greater than 1 inch was not an option before I began training at Sensible Fitness.  Recently I was able to successful walk in 3.5-inch heels, with confidence.  Now that is worth celebrating!
